STRONG | March 2018: New York “Strong” State of Mind

There is no state of mind that embodies the perception of New York for me more than strong. In the midst of the American Revolution, New York and the historical key players that called it home fought for their freedom from Great Britain as if they knew the yet-to-be-formed United States would become the epicenter for trailblazers and visionaries and would serve as a example of unity and hope for the world. And it didn’t always involve the firing of weapons or bloodshed (though there was plenty of that, too), as was the case with the capture of Fort Ticonderoga here in New York, an important milestone of the war. It was intelligence, and strength of the human mind and will, that prevailed.

Fast forward almost 300 years, New York reigns as one of the most powerful and tenacious states in the world. In addition to its largest city being the global financial capital, as a friend once said, “New York City is the entry point of the reckless pursuit of individual dreams”, and that leap of faith has paid off for so many, quite a few of those being women.

But New York’s stronghold is not just about New York City. Up in the Capital Region, not far from Saratoga Springs, strong communities supported the glove and leather industries, both of which are very much a part of the New York narrative, especially as it pertains to the in-state maker movement. Then there’s garnet mining in the Adirondacks, which is so synonymous with New York that even the New World Trade Center had a cornerstone constructed with the “largest and hardest garnets in the world.” Gold teeth are even rumored to have been invented in Rochester by Dr. J.B. Beers. Just chew on that one…
