New York States of Mind, our digital magazine, just celebrated its third birthday (yay!). Back when this company was merely an idea in formation, my co-founder and I brainstormed together to select the precisely right name. We needed something that would convey our mission of seeking out, connecting, curating and celebrating the very best of what New York State has to offer; it was a tall order.
In our estimation, diversity was then, and is now, New York’s greatest asset. We firmly believe that there are many, maybe even infinite, ways of defining one’s “New York state of mind,” with none ranking more or less important than any other. And so in christening our business we quite deliberately used the plurality of “states” (as opposed to the singular, popularized by Billy Joel’s song). There’s room enough for all of us, and great things happen when conversations and exchanges of ideas take place.
For the third year in a row, we are dubbing October’s theme the “New York Spirited State of Mind.” Join us as we explore the various connotations of “spirited” — from Washington Irving’s haunting spirits in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (set in Tarrytown, N.Y.), to the drinkable spirits served up along our wine trails throughout every corner of the state, to certain feisty spirited New Yorkers who truly embody that unique alchemy of ferocity and perseverance for which we’re known, and much more.
Without question, this is my favorite state of mind.
From New York City,
