APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN CLUB HIKING SERIES

Throughout Summer 2013 we shared Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)'s wide ranging outdoor activities with you. Though the links in the story are specific to Summer 2013 events, we encourage you to peruse these adventures and keep an eye out for repeats in future summers. AMC makes it easy to explore the best of New York State's great outdoors. --- It’s safe to say it’s been a hot summer. With August on the horizon, we recommend spending the month's inaugural weekend with friends (or making new ones!) at one of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Young Professionals Group’s planned activities. Lauren Zondag, the chapter’s program manager, organizes all trips for young professionals (ages 21-35) from the New York City area. Excursions range from group ski trips in the wintertime to hiking Breakneck trail (which begins right at a platform-less stop on the Metro-North rail line!) to bike rides paired with celebratory beers afterwards. One of Lovejoy’s favorite trips began at Washington Square Park for a bike ride to the Red Lantern, a bike shop bar in Brooklyn. “We biked out there, had a few beers and hung out for a while,” Lovejoy told me. “And on a Tuesday!” Both active and social, the group activities range from Softball in Central Park every Sunday to beginner level hikes at Schunemunk State Park. One Young Professionals’ cycling trip even included a bike blessing ceremony at St. John the Divine on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Swing by the AMC NYC Program Open House tonight to learn about these upcoming trips and more! We recommend: Harriman Blueberry and Lake Hike on August 3. Train or drive to the Tuxedo train station (via Port Jervis from Penn Station) for a group hike. Discover wild blueberries, lunch by the lake and end with a beer together in town after a hard day's hike!
