Classic American food — with an Upstate New York bent — and friendly, personal service define Stella. If you love tucking into heaving plates of crispy brick chicken and sweet corn succotash, generous crab cakes with avocado crema and pasta puttanesca, this is your place. Bring a big appetite and a smile. $$

The Captain’s Table is best enjoyed up on the 60-seat deck with a stunning view of Chautauqua Lake. The main dining room offers a wood-burning fireplace, wood paneling and oak booths. With a view of the lake, you may be thinking seafood. Go for it. The seared scallops are fantastic, but so is the Chicken Rosa, with layers of mozzarella, peppers, ham, capers, artichoke hearts. Their classic cocktails provide the perfect ballast. $$$

Ellicottville’s food is as delicious as their beers are, and just as hearty. The Truffle Parmesan Fries are addictive, but their salads are worth checking out too, and feel like a meal in themselves. We could graze all day on the Summer Nicoise (grilled ahi tuna, cured olives, egg, arugula, seasonal vegetables), and the Thai Beef Salad (with shredded romaine and Napa cabbage, pickled red onions, carrots, crispy noodles, roasted peanuts and marinated beef) is a dinner+. $$
