Of all the many books recommended for this Summer 2019, The Editor by Steven Rowley is our number one pick for the perfect New York summer read. While not set literally at sea, this novel’s central character, James Smale, is certainly being tossed on the waves of self-understanding and of his relationship with his mother, as his autobiographically-inspired draft novel catches the interest of the most fascinating editor of that time, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. It even includes a lighthouse of sorts. Most of the action unfolds between New York City and Upstate, with -- as would be hoped -- a memorable trip to Martha’s Vineyard.
