GRATEFUL | Recipe of the Month: Orange Maple Cranberry Sauce

The team at New York Makers is determined to help in making maple syrup, especially New York State-made, a healthier alternative to refined sugar in recipes that call for the sweet stuff, which is why this month we are featuring Crown Maple’s Amber Color, Grade A Maple Syrup in a very simple and tasty Orange Maple Cranberry Sauce Thanksgiving side.

Total time: 25 minutes.

3 cups fresh cranberries

1/2 cup Crown Maple’s Amber Color, Grade A Maple Syrup*

1 tablespoon orange zest

1/2 cup fresh orange juice

1/2 cup water

Cinnamon stick

*Purchase the special ingredient from above:

Rinse the cranberries. Discard any mushy or underripe berries and stems.

Place the cranberries, 1/2 cup maple syrup, orange zest, orange juice, water, and cinnamon stick in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture comes to a boil. Continue a slow boil over low heat until the berries burst and break down, forming a sauce, 15-20 minutes.

Taste for sweetness. If it’s too tart, add more syrup – a tablespoon at a time – until the sauce tastes sweet enough for you.

Remove from the heat and let cool. Spoon into your serving container to serve or store in an airtight container, refrigerated, for 3-4 days.
