Cultivating shiitake mushrooms at See and Be Kitchen in Cairo, NY
June finds us in a New York Cultivating State of Mind, as we not only observe grasses, grains, flowers, fruits, and produce growing in our fields and gardens, but also find ourselves growing into our new selves as we begin to emerge from pandemic lockdown.
We find ourselves wearing masks as we walk down the street and realizing we don’t need them; conversely, running into a store forgetting to put on a mask and realizing we may still need one inside! But we are getting there. Neighborhood BBQ’s are happening. Concerts are beginning again, with social distancing and other precautions in place. Graduations are taking place, and Father’s Day is right around the corner (Sunday, June 20th).
One great cultivating benefit is to pick your own vegetables (asparagus season began in May and continues through early June at Greig Farm!) and fruits as they begin to mature. We will soon post our U-Pick Strawberry list. Stay tuned!
This month, we also speak with one of our newest makers, Jody Apap of Papa’s Best Batch, about his journey cultivating a popular jerky and smoked nut business in Red Hook, NY, and expanding to hundreds of retail locations throughout the US. And finally, friend to New York Makers Susan Rockefeller, founder of Musings Magazine, will be launching a CBD fragrance line very soon and we cannot wait to find out more! Muses Neck Potion No. 9™ celebrates the land of the Hudson Valley in New York, and the power of regenerative farming and plant medicine.
Enjoy this wonderful month of June as we emerge out of our homes and back into the bustling world!
