Tomorrow is the first day of summer and (gasp!) we’re already thinking cool thoughts. Admit it: Summers in New York can be oppressively hot and inevitably have us yearning for those cold winter days that call for cozying up under a blanket, drinking hot chocolate and — if we’re lucky — sitting by a fire. In anticipation of the imminent and unbearable rising mercury this season, we’ve compiled the perfect (virtual) escape: one that only requires your imagination. Here goes...
Remember that weekend this past winter when a fresh snow blanketed the State, and much of the Northeast? Superstorm Nemo touched down on Friday, February 8, and we found ourselves snowed in at a magical Ulster County retreat amid the Catskills: Mohonk Mountain House. Nestled high above the collegiate and artistic hustle of downtown New Paltz, Mohonk Mountain House sits secluded on the Shawangunk Ridge and is reminiscent of a Swiss chalet. There, we toured freshly powdered trails on cross country skis, engaged our inner child at the outdoor ice skating pavilion and enjoyed fireside cups of piping hot tea. We even took a dip in a heated outdoor mineral pool.
It was a dreamy escape that had us asking, “Is this real life?” It’s almost impossible to imagine when the forecast calls for 90 degrees and humid. But, we can promise you that such a weekend DID exist, and could be yours next winter. See for yourself in the photos below.
Eager for more? When the temperatures start to plummet, we’ll be sharing everything you need to know to book your own winter getaway at Mohonk Mountain House.
