MEET THE MAKERS OF NEW YORK MAKERS
ABOUT NATURALLY FELT
It all started in an apartment in Manhattan where Alexa Ginsburg's mother, a graphic designer, kept her supplied with colored paper, paint, glitter, and glue. Fabric scraps, yarn, leather samples, drawing and painting lessons were supplied by the rest of Alexa's extended family, all artists and craftspeople. She spent much of her childhood in the great museums of NYC and at The Cooper Union, where she received her BFA. After graduating, Alexa set out to explore other parts of the world.
Alexa's love of textiles began in a small village on the other side of the world where she found colorful yarns drying in the sun and being woven into cloth on old wooden looms. She and her husband traveled from village to village and brought clothing sewn from this beautiful hand loomed cloth back to the states. After her two children were born, it was harder to travel those long dusty roads. She and her family settled down to run a publishing company. Alexa was also designing and illustrating children's books.
Beyond working at the computer, Alexa needed something she could really get her hands into. When she discovered Felt, she knew it was the perfect medium for her...soft, warm, fuzzy, versatile and non-digital. Alexa joined a felting guild, took workshops and studied with teachers from around the world. Her work is influenced by all of her past experiences. She loves designing patterns and working with color, form and fiber.
Alexa's winding path led her to the Catskills, where she currently lives. She enjoys the natural beauty of the area, the farmers' markets, the art and culture, and the people.
