About Jay Teske Leather Co.
There’s nothing quite like a good romance and the tale of Jay Teske and Hadas Liebermann, the team behind Jay Teske Leather Co., is a love story that stars a husband and a wife, and their relationships with their crafts.
Jay and Hadas met nearly two decades ago in their shared New Jersey hometown. A number of years later and after becoming husband and wife, they headed north to lay down roots in Kingston, N.Y. Known for its creative community (it is also home to some of the other artisans featured on New York Makers) Kingston was the perfect new base for the couple’s entrepreneurial dreams. They purchased a two-story brick edifice built in 1893, and set about renovating the top floor into their home and converting the bottom floor into their atelier.
In 2006, they co-founded Pirate Upholstery, which makes custom upholstered motorcycle seats. When a customer requested a matching detachable saddlebag, Jay created a bespoke piece that resembled a natty briefcase; the aesthetic was more Savile Row than Harley Davidson. Commercial interest in the style bolstered Jay and Hadas’ confidence that they could produce a line of rustic-meets-sophisticated handmade leather goods for the modern person.
In 2014 they launched Jay Teske Leather Co., and that same year the company was named a Martha Stewart American Made 2014 finalist.
The product line ranges from unique bicycle accessories — a detachable beer carrier, a portable wine holder, and a bell attached to hand-braided kangaroo lace — to work accessories (portfolios, card cases, wallets, money clips), to home accessories (luggage tags, plant holders, skillet grips, trivets). These clever, beautifully handcrafted offerings are simultaneously ideal for the gentleman, or lady, who has everything, and also the exact products that should be requisite in every household and office. They’re an ode to the best of the past, and a vow to last till death do you part.
