About Lucky Fish
Lucky Fish in Brooklyn, NY
New York maker of Five Boroughs Tea Towel. Founder: Jann Cheifitz.
Whether you're a lucky duck or a lucky fish is merely a state of mind. In the 1980s, South African native Jann Cheifitz delved headlong into the challenge of incorporating her personal identity and political activism into her artwork during the height of Apartheid. Twenty-something years later, the printing techniques Jann developed — perfectly imperfect, she says — drive the work she creates in her Red Hook, Brooklyn studio. The designs and colors in her line of handcrafted, 100% natural canvas masks, are inspired by a life of global travel. As kids in South Africa we would say, 'You lucky fish' to someone who had gotten, done or become something enviable. From Apartheid to liberation, these masks are a glimmer of hope that artistry and creativity can free you to be whomever you want to be.
The New York Makers Marketplace offers a curated selection of unique, mindfully-designed — often handmade or hand-crafted — gifts created by nearly 100 creative makers located across New York state, including the Hudson Valley, Catskills and Adirondacks.
