8 WAYS TO WOW DAD THIS FATHER’S DAY

POSTED: 20 May 2013 | BY: MIRANDA LANZILLOTTI
Half of the Chinese word for father, “baba,” is a homonym for the number “8.” For that reason, Father’s Day in China is celebrated on August 8 (8/8). Incidentally — or perhaps coincidentally — the number 8 is also the luckiest in Chinese culture. Put yourself into a Chinese state of mind and show your Baba how lucky you are to have him in your life by gifting him one of these 8 great Father’s Day gifts. (Father’s Day is June 16th.) --

[EPICURATE]: For the dad who loves to grill (and the family who loves to eat), we have a collection of items guaranteed to make his next barbecue full of flavor.

1. Adirondack Grilling Pellets in Apple/Maple: $11.75
Turn Dad’s grill into a smoker with a bag of Adirondack Grilling Pellets, made using some of the Adirondacks’ best resources: locally-grown apple pulp and recycled maple wood. The flavor combination of apple and maple couldn’t be more New York.
2. Catskill Provisions Artisanal Marinade Trio: $36
Marinate in Dad’s greatness with the Artisanal Marinade Trio by Catskill Provisions. The set includes one bottle each of Balsamic Fig, Honey Ginger and BBQ Sauce. Yeah, our mouths are watering too.
3. Gowanus Furniture Co.’s Morse Code “Kentile” Cutting Board: $126
Dad can prepare — or present — his grilled feast on a customized Morse Code “Kentile” Cutting Board by Gowanus Furniture Co. The dark stripes of wood are maker Pete Raho’s way of representing Morse Code and providing a subtle monogram to this kitchen staple. Now, Dad will have a cooking gadget all his own.
4. Sundaes Best 15oz. Original Hot Fudge Sauce: $19.50
No meal would be complete without dessert. Now that warmer weather’s in full swing, end the day with a big bowl of ice cream topped with the all-natural ingredients of this decadent hot fudge sauce from Saratoga Springs.

[DECORATE]: For the dad with style — or the one whose closet needs a serious makeover — we have the right accessories to enhance any wardrobe.

5. Alicia Adams Alpaca Knitted Alpaca Tie: $108
Sure, Dad has plenty of ties already — after all, how many Father’s Days have you already celebrated? We doubt his neckware collection includes something as unique as the Knitted Alpaca Tie by Alicia Adams Alpaca. Hand-made from 100% baby alpaca wool, these ties incorporate two of the latest men’s fashion trends: knit fabric and a skinny width. A win-win.
6. fritelli & LOCKWOOD Gridlock Pattern Bow Tie in Cream: $84
Whether Dad’s a dapper dandy or needs a (subtle) nudge to push the fashion envelope, look no further than the Gridlock Pattern Bow Tie in Cream from fritelli & LOCKWOOD. Handwoven on a traditional loom, this bow tie comes in a pattern and color combination perfect for the bow tie novice (there’s a “pre-tied” option!) — or expert (order the “self-tie”).
7. Found My Animal Dog Bandana: $35
Spruce up Dad’s best friend in this scout-worthy bandana. For their long walks or recreational adventures together, a sharp pup will keep Dad company even while you’re away.
8. SimplyNu Salvaged Slate & Reclaimed Wood Small Tabletop Clock: $84.50
Dad always caught you coming home past curfew, but he has also been incredibly steadfast and reliable. Celebrate his timeliness and timelessness with this salvaged slate and reclaimed wood clock from SimplyNu. It comes without an alarm, so Dad can really enjoy his day on his own schedule.
